How to get more reviews as a tradesperson

Reviews are often the thing that decides between you and the next tradesperson. Most happy customers never leave one unless they are asked, so asking is the whole trick.

Ask at the right moment

The best time is just after the job is finished and the client is pleased, while they are looking at the result. A quick, genuine request then works far better than a message weeks later.

Make it easy

  • Send a direct link to the place you want the review, so it is one tap.
  • Say which site and why: for example, that it helps people find a reliable local tradesperson.
  • Use a QR code on your invoice or business card.

A simple message you can adapt

Something like: "Thanks again, it was a pleasure working on your home. If you are happy with the job, a short review would really help me. Here is the link." Keep it short, and never offer money or favours in return.

Add photos where the client agrees

Before and after photos next to a review make it more convincing. Always ask permission before you share pictures of someone's home.

Reply to every review

Thank people for good reviews, by name where appropriate. New customers read replies as much as the reviews themselves.

Handle a bad review calmly

  • Take a breath and do not reply while you are angry.
  • Respond politely, say what you will do to put things right and offer to talk offline.
  • Do not argue, and do not post private details about the client.

Do not fake or buy reviews

Fake reviews, or paying for them, can get you removed from platforms and can break consumer rules. Real reviews from real jobs are worth far more.

Make it part of finishing a job

Add the review request to your end-of-job routine, alongside the final invoice and tidying up. On GlowUpp, a complete profile with recent work also helps homeowners choose you. Read our guide on showing clients the finished job first for more.

Show clients the job before you quote

Free profile, your own link and QR code, and a redesign of the client's own space. You only pay when a job is won.

Common questions

When should I ask for a review?
Soon after you finish the job, while the client is happy with the result and the work is fresh in their mind.
Can I offer a discount for a review?
It is best not to. Incentivised reviews can break the rules of review platforms and can undermine trust.
How should I answer a bad review?
Stay calm and polite, explain how you will put it right and offer to talk offline. Never argue in public.
